The Resurrection

Contrast volume, proportions and delicate florals with sportswear classics, hiking boots and waxed coatings. London. Images courtesy of Paul Hartnett, shot for WGSN.

This Guy

Stolen from work and I’ve mislaid the credit. Pink underwear nicely referencing the fake flowers – and a DIY approach to cropped proportions.

Kinaesthetic Companions

Don’t really know how to describe DIS Magazine without dropping a new media art cliché. So I’m just going to say their fashion is grosser than gross.

the number of the beast

I got put onto Bizarro fiction by friend/co-writer Cher while we were researching a feature for the next issue of 032c. Not for the feint-hearted – and not really one for reading on the Overground in the morning either – but actually quite rewarding to read and very funny in an utterly sick and demented way. This article by Damien G Walter explains it all better than I ever could, but put way too basically it’s a bit like the Chapman Bros artwork in book form. And if you thought Cameron Pierce’s title for Ass Goblins of Auschwitz was good, wait till you see Carlton Mellick III’s back catalogue of genre classics which includes The Haunted Vagina, War Slut and The Baby Jesus Butt Plug. Should be something in there to offend everyone. Also, don’t know if this is deliberate – I guess it is, but on Amazon this book is £6.66.

Curt

One of those things where you have an image in your head of exactly what you want but when you get to the shop that sells that item you end up seeing something else and completely falling in love with that instead. In this case it was these Curt derbies from Grenson, I was 100% sold on the black but they didn’t have them in – but they did have the brown version instead and they’re amazing. The tan is a bit more greyed off  than in this image. And I wore them all day for the first time during Fashion Week and didn’t even have to deploy a single Elastoplast.

Black Dog

Feet must be as difficult as hands when it comes to still life. Reminds me of the Albrecht Dürer drawing hands joke in Monty Python’s Papperbok. Really this painting by Joan Semmel at the Blum & Poe gallery in LA is all about colour. You know that because its title is Red White and Blue (1973).

Antenne Books

Met Marius of Antenne Books at the new Jacket Required menswear tradeshow in Arnold Circus today and had a chat with him about the publishers their online store represents, and turns out some of his recent photography jobs overlap with a few bits of writing I’ve been doing for various magazines. Showed me a copy of Qompendium too which I’d never seen before. Nice shop.

The Rebel 4×4 (ii)

Tom Pounder‘s paintings are in a group show at the L-13 Light Industrial Workshop in Clerkenwell until the end of August. The exhibition is curated by Harry Pye using a format that combines 4 artists and 4 writers, with the writers analysing the work of each artist in turn for an accompanying copy of The Rebel paper, art directed and printed by the awesome GUT. Pounder is like a Benedict Paucemanly for the art world, absorbing a ceaseless bombardment of commercial and cultural transmissions from Earth, then reordering, transmogrifying and beaming them back to our frontal lobes through his paintings. M. John Harrison might not agree but that’s what I think anyway. You definitely need to see his stuff.

closeouts

On holiday in Portugal last week we visited Carrapateira beach and it reminded me how much I miss surfing. I haven’t been in the water for a couple of years now and my boards and suits are rotting in my parents’ shed since I stopped making time at the weekends to get out of London. Things are going to change there. This picture by Rennie Ellis posted on the Selvedgeyard made me laugh because the Brisbane surfers in this 80s pub look like a nice bunch of lads but you know full well they’re hard as nails. Nothing ironic about a pair of tight cotton nylon boardshorts back in the day.

E.M.T. in MSP

Trawling through tumblrs again today and found some photos by Heinz Peter Knes. Feels like the sort of thing Gosha Rubchinskiy would be into. Look at this interview I did with him for THEPOP last year, you’ll see what I mean.
